Police in Turkey have found a body

Police say a body has been found in Turkey where a Fylde coast grandfather went missing last month. Lancashire Police have confirmed the jandarma the Turkish police have put out a statement saying a body has been found off the Lycian Way, where 67-year-old John Kirkham was walking when he disappeared on August 10.

The former BAE Systems project manager, from Fleetwood, was on holiday with his wife Sandra, when he failed to return from a trek along the beauty spot. A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said: “The body of a man has been found in Turkey, just off the Lycian Way. “Officers from Lancashire Constabulary are liaising with the Turkish authorities to assist in the identification process.

“Mrs Kirkham and her family have been made aware and are being supported by family liaison officers.” She added it would take several days for the body to be formally identified and it was not yet known if it was that of Mr Kirkham.

Plackpool Gazette Police in Turkey have found a body thought to be that of Lancashire tourist John Kirkham – who vanished while walking on a picturesque mountain track. Keen walker Mr Kirkham, 67, failed to return from a six-mile trek along part of the Lycian Way in Southern Turkey  famous as aroute trodden by St Paul in the 1st century AD.

Mr Kirkham, a retired BAE Systmes engineer, was on holiday in the resort of Olu Deniz with his wife Sandra, 63, and was fully-equipped when he failed to return from the solitary expedition on 10th August.

According to reports from Turkey Mr Kirkham’s body was found in a river bed near the village of Kozagac and his belongings, including money and other items, were on his person. Authorities said it was possible Kirkham lost his balance and fell from a height of 15 meters into the river bed. Mr and Mrs Kirkham has been on holiday with their granddaughter Carys, 14, and one of her friends, when he vanished.

He had set off around 6am well-equipped for the journey along the Lycian Way, reputed to be one of the 10 most beautiful walks in the world. He was last seen at a village, named Kozagnac, where he asked a local if he had seen his camera which he said was missing. Retired civil servant Mrs Kirkham was being comforted by family and friends a her home in Ennerdale Avenue, Fleetwood.
