Rains continued in Istanbul
Torrential rains continued in some parts of Turkey on Saturday (September 12th) causing new floods. A river in Istanbul went out of its bed flooding nearby houses and production facilities. A tornado in Alanya on the Mediterranean coast injured ten German and Russian tourists. Meanwhile, Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler announced on Saturday that a natural disaster has been declared.
So far, 33 people have been killed, and damages are estimated at 700m euros. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised new homes will be built for those that are now homeless due to the floods. (AFP, BTA, Anadolu news agency – 12/09/09; DPA, Reuters – 11/09/09)
