British man beating his girlfriend to death
Greek police say a British man has been arrested on the southern Greek island of Crete on suspicion of beating his girlfriend to death. Police said Tuesday that the 22-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested late Monday and faces charges of causing fatal bodily injury.
His 21-year-old girlfriend, who also has not been named, died Monday afternoon, a day after being admitted to a hospital in Herakleion suffering from severe abdomen pain.
Many newspapers reported that Herakleion police said the woman’s doctors and a coroner informed authorities she had suffered ruptured internal organs not due to illness, but “evidently caused by the use of physical violence.” She underwent surgery but died in the hospital’s intensive care unit. The suspect was to appear before a prosecutor later Tuesday.
She underwent surgery but died in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Local police said the couple had rowed over the attention she had been receiving from other men. They were today holding the boyfriend in custody.
The incident took place at the Malia coastal holiday resort of Crete, popular among heavy drinking young British holidaymakers. It is understood Chelsea was working there.
Walker is likely to be jailed pending trial, local sources said, following a decision that will be taken jointly by a magistrate and a prosecutor. Under Greek law he faces up to ten years in jail.
Today, friends of Chelsea set up a Chelsea Hyndman Appreciation Page on the social networking website Facebook, which has attracted more than 200 members. Natalie Sloper, who created the page, wrote: “Chelsea Hyndman was one of the most awesome, kindest, fantastic girls you could ever meet.
